Do you buy your wife clothes?

August 20th, 2008 at 04:06 pm

Wife's birthday is Friday and I need to buy her something. She does not want me to spend more than $150.

Most years in the past I get her clothes- she wears suits to work and I do a reasonable job picking out good ones. Her best 3 or 4 power suits were picked out by me.

Because we were going through some expensive fertility treatments last year at this time she did not want a gift... and because she was in hospital for my birthday she did not get me a gift either.

So I am going shopping today or tomorrow after work. Any of you guys out there- do you buy your wife clothes, or am I just too unique in that regard?

Wow, I'm impressed! BF could probably do an alright job, whenever we go shopping together he can usually tell if something is "me" or not. But I'm not sure how he'd do with the sizing, I always have to try everything on when I go myself!

I've never done that before, but I don't speak for all guys. One of my friends do, but he's the only one I know that does that.

Your wife and I share the same birthdate. My husband asked me what I wanted for my birthday, I told him just dinner. He has never given me clothes, but I've gotten a few jewelry pieces (rings which are my favorite). Get her some clothes if you feel comfortable doing so. Happy Birthday to your wife.

Jewelry! My favorite gift from my husband was a nice pair of diamond earrings. And it's my favorite not because they're gorgeous, but because he was so excited about the gift that he made me open it two days early!

Seriously, you can get a nice pair of earrings for that price. Like little blue stones... one for each baby boy!

If you can pull of the clothes thing, and that's what she REALLY wants, go for it. Otherwise, I recommend romantic. Fabulous perfume. Pretty jewlery.

Happy, happy birthday to Mrs. Ohio!

I never liked it when my husband bought clothes for me because he thinks I'm several sizes smaller than I really am, and he pick colors that don't suit me. (He is a genius at picking out jewelry I like, though. :-D) Does your wife have a hobby or pastime she enjoys? Perhaps she'd like a boxed set of a season of her favorite TV show? Or is there a household chore that she hates to do that you could do instead of her for a month?

My wife has enough trouble buying her own clothes. Womens clothing sizes make no sense. The numbers don't mean anything. A size 6 from one company might be equivalent to a size 8 from another company or a size 4 from a 3rd company. Men's clothing is much more standardized: 32 inches is 32 inches. Many shopping trips, she has tried on 8 or 10 or 12 pairs of pants without finding a single one that fit properly.

So no, I never buy my wife clothing. Nor does she buy me clothing. We shop for ourselves.

I have no fashion sense, so need help from DH & DD, but he couldn't buy it without my first trying it on. Like Disneysteve points out, sizing is just too strange in womens wear.

I was thinking along the same lines as swimgirl- how about some jewelry made with the boys' birthstones?

I agree with the men. Nope don't buy clothes for the wife. We just budget her some clothes. I go enjoy the day, I watch the boys.

Buy my wife clothes, that's just a no win situattion.

I would much rather buy my own clothes. Plus suites are not fun clothes. I would much rather get a fun gift than clothes for work.

No way does DH buy me clothes. But I buy him clothes all the time. Jewelry. Or better yet anything she really could use replaced like a new bedding set, new towels, pots and pans. Something that really "doesn't" need replacing but would be pretty if you did.

I don't have problems picking out the clothes. Sizes are sometimes iffy, but I have been shopping with wife enough to know she is either a 2-4-6 depending on the retailer.

The bigger issue is the primary place I buy her clothes and suits (B. Moss) went out of business in the mall I went to last night- so I had to go to Dilliards and found a suit originally prices $170 for $44. Blue coat/ Black skirt. Looked quite good.

I know how to match some colors. My wife comments to me she will dress the kids for school picture day... but I was the one which picked most of the colors for the rooms in the house- once I read the home depot/Loews handouts for how to pick colors (based on complimentary, similar shades or primary/secondary), it became quite easy to sort through what colors go good with what.

If it were up to my wife, she would not take chances and just have black or tan suits. Thanks to me helping her she has blue, red, pink in addition to black, gray, tan and white suits.

I also could not find the Peyton Manning things at the mall because the sports memorabilia store also closed. HMM.

Sounds like you know your stuff and your wife appreciates it, so go with it! Oh, and throw in some jewelry of course! Smile

My BF has tried twice to buy me clothes. Both times a disaster! Wrong colors, wrong style, wrong size. Poor boy just can't win.

  14. jIM_Ohio Says:

Wife liked the suit. Might have been a size too big... but I knew that when I bought it.

This isto late- but my GF bought me a good pair of Oakley sunglasses for $110 a few years ago- still wear em today. Those things last. I love them.
